Equitable Teaching Reflection: Introduction

To conclude this class, Dr. Dunleavy has assigned an "equitable teaching reflection," a way to think back on what we've learned and talked about this semester. To accomplish this reflection, I have chosen to compose a series of blog posts reviewing my previous posts and seeing where I've grown, where I've stayed the same, and what I'm still wondering about. Within each post, I will link back to the previous, related posts and sometimes include direct quotes or entire pieces with clarified edits. As usual, I will be citing course readings, but this time I will do so a bit more diligently than I have in previous posts when it was more casual. Then, at the end of the reflection posts, I will include one final post with my questions, wonderings, and other wrap up thoughts about the course.

Student Teaching: Week 1

Welcome back to my blog! A new semester is upon us! Thus, a new format of blog posts! For the most part, I will now be using this as a weekly space to reflect on my student teaching experience as it progresses. Student Teaching: Week 13

What I Did This Week Monday : graded homework, attended a planning meeting Tuesday : taught IM1, graded homework, gave an IM2 test, graded tests Wednesday : graded homework and tests Thursday : taught IM2, taught IM1, graded homework and tests Friday : gave a make-up IM2 test, answered questions during the asynchronous day What I Will Do Next Week: A Reflection I will teach the same classes that I usually do and lend a hand when asked. I will try to keep myself from taking on too much because I do not have to and I need to remember that. I did a decently good job of asking for time off from things I did not feel prepared to tackle, but I still provided help where I could between my peers. I asked for help when I needed it. Weekly Question: How do students’ mathematical identities matter in our classrooms?

Essential Question: What does equitable, justice-oriented, and/or anti-racist mathematics learning look like? In reading for this week, I almost felt silly having referenced gendered differences and that TikTok (which you can find here: https://www.tiktok.com/@gracie.ham/video/6864198263063448837) last week. Laurie Rubel writes "Speaking Up and Speaking Out about Gender in Mathematics" (2016) quite specifically about gender, whereas my connections to last week's Gutiérrez (2018) stretched the boundaries of what was explicitly stated in the article. But I was surprised to take the gendered question into a completely different direction in Rubel's writing.
